What Is the Conversatorio
“El fenómeno del macho: ¿nace o se aprende”
“El fenómeno del macho: ¿nace o se aprende” is a guided, psychoeducational conversatorio (facilitated dialogue) that explores how cultural beliefs about masculinity are formed, reinforced, and challenged across generations.
Rather than placing blame, this space invites reflection, learning, and honest conversation about how social norms, family dynamics, media, trauma, and historical context shape ideas of manhood. Participants examine whether machismo is an inherent trait or a learned behavior—and how it can evolve.

Purpose
The conversatorio aims to:
- Increase awareness of how rigid gender roles impact emotional health, relationships, and community well-being
- Distinguish between healthy expressions of masculinity and harmful behaviors rooted in control, silence, or violence
- Promote emotional literacy, accountability, and respectful relationships
- Support the prevention of domestic violence, sexual violence, and intergenerational trauma
Approach
This is not a lecture and not a confrontation. It is:
- Trauma-informed
- Culturally responsive
- Non-judgmental
- Rooted in lived experience and evidence-based concepts
Who Is It For
- General community members
- Men and women seeking to understand cultural patterns around masculinity
- Educators, advocates, and service providers
- Survivors and allies (participation is always voluntary)
Why It Matters
Machismo does not exist in isolation. When left unexamined, it can contribute to emotional suppression, power imbalances, and cycles of harm. When explored thoughtfully, it can be redefined to include empathy, responsibility, emotional expression, and mutual respect.
This conversatorio creates space to question inherited beliefs , break silence, and imagine healthier ways of being—individually and collectively.
